He studied at the University of Toronto where he was editor of the Varsity. After leaving the University, Allan acted on the stage in Toronto and worked for the Peterborough Examiner as a cub reporter before beginning his career in radio as an announcer at CFRB in Toronto. He spent some time in England in 1938 and 1939 and then worked with CBC in Vancouver until 1943 when he became CBC's Supervisor of Drama in Toronto. He was the creator of the "Stage" series which he produced throughout twelve seasons, 1944-1955, except during a brief leave of absence when he returned to England in 1951 and 1952.
Allan was the first artistic director of the Shaw Festival, 1963-1965, and directed at the Citadel Theatre, Edmonton, and Hart House Theatre, Toronto. He acted as regional adjudicator for the Dominion Drama Festival in 1965. In his last years Allan was best known for the popular short essays he wrote and read on CBC from 1967 until struck in 1973 by the illness which led to his death. His autobiography with a collection of his essays, Andrew Allan: A Self Portrait, was published posthumously in 1974.
