This documentary spins around the life of an author and his work. Malcolm Lowry has been called everything from a tormented genius to a repulsive drunk. His one great work, "Under The Volcano", has been hailed as one of the greatest novels of this century. Under the direction of one of Canada's foremost documentarians, Donald Brittain, excerpts from Lowry's book are woven together with film sequences shot in Mexico, California, Vancouver, New York and England, the countries, cities, villages and saloons of Lowry's life. Lowry's widow, Margerie Bonner Lowry, agreed to participate in this film; his last remaining brother, Russell, appears in a first-time-ever interview. Richard Burton, a long-time Lowry admirer, reads excerpts from the book for this evocative documentary. <99mn>
