Interview of Mrs. Marian Penney as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson at Penney’s home in Victoria, British Columbia, on the afternoon of 22 May 1979. She talks about: her early interest in physical education, in school in Sarnia, Ontario, and then at the Ontario College of Education at the University of Toronto; the influence of Helen Bryans; her first teaching experience at Central Collegiate in London, Ontario in 1931; teaching at Oakwood Collegiate in Toronto and comments on girls’ intercollegiate sports; graduate study at the Texas State College for Women in 1940 and 1941, making her one of the first two Canadian women to earn a master’s degree in physical education, the other being Helen Bryans; her experience at a folk school in Denmark, studying gymnastics with Ellie Bjorkston; mass demonstration programs in Toronto in the 1940s; her move to British Columbia and responsibilities in developing the undergraduate program in physical education at the University of British Columbia in 1946; her involvement with the Physical Education Section of the Ontario Education Association and attendance at the first meeting of the Canadian Physical Education Association in Toronto in 1933; involvement with the Royal Life Saving Society; her recollections of involvement with the Western Society for Physical Education of College Women in the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation; her tenure as president, making her the only Canadian to be so honoured other than Dr. Robert Tait McKenzie; responsibilities as Chair of the Women’s Branch of the Canadian Institute of Educational Affairs; the use of a Fellowship from the Fitness and Amateur Sport Directorate to pursue doctoral studies at New York University; the use of a British Council Grant to study movement education in Britain; reminiscences on the evolution of physical education for girls and women in Canada; professional associates who have made significant contributions to physical education, including: Sheila Stanley; Gerald Kenyon; Gerry Glassford; Bob Morford; Anne Espanschade; J.B. Nash; Eleanor Metheny; Eileen Lockhart; Lois Enfeld and Marie Nokus; comments on the development of undergraduate and graduate programs in Canada and their impact on the profession in Canada during the 20th century; and philosophical reflections on the place of physical education and sport in Canadian society and the future direction of the field.
