Fonds consists of diaries of Dr. William Cowan kept while serving as surgeon and fur trader at Fort Garry, Moose Factory, York Factory and the environs. There are several breaks in the diaries, notably during the Riel uprising, 1869-1870. A list of diaries is included in the volume.

Cowan, William : Dr. William Cowan was surgeon to the enrolled army pensioners at Fort Garry, in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company. During his years at Red River he made several long journeys.
