Collection consists of a submission by Peter Russell to the Upper Canada House of Assembly (1796); a photocopy of a commission appointing Russell as Administrator of Upper Canada (1796); and two of Russell's letterbooks, one original, 1796-1798, and one transcript, 1799.

Collection also consists of Russell family papers including correspondence, accounts and memoranda of Peter Russell, his father Richard Russell and his step-sister Elizabeth Russell. See microfilm reels M-743 to M-747.

Russell, Peter, 1733-1808 (family) : Peter Russell served with the British Army, 1752-1771, and as assistant secretary to Sir Henry Clinton until his departure from America in 1782. In 1791 he came out to Canada with Lt. Gov. Simcoe and held the post of Receiver-General of Upper Canada, 1792-1808. He was also a member of the Executive and Legislative Councils, and administrator of the province, 1796-1799. His father, Richard Russell, served with the British army, navy and civil services.

Note générale :

Received at various times between 1913-1973; the commission appointing Russell was copied in 1955 from records held by the office of the Secretary of State; the 1796-1798 letterbook was received in 1973; the 1799 letterbook was copied in 1913 from the originals held by the Montreal Historical Society; and the microfilm was shot in 1964 from the originals held by the Archives of Ontario.
