Fonds consists of two diaries of daily entries. The longer of the two covers the voyage to Montreal, the train and boat trip to Victoria, his efforts to secure employment in the city and his start with the survey crew; the second is an edited version of the first and concludes with his arrival in Victoria. The entries are fairly detailed and contain observations on the cities and landscapes that he saw, Indians, conditions of transcontinental railway travel, and settlers in northern British Columbia.

Beattie, Martin : Martin Beattie of Dublin, Ireland came to Canada in 1892 aboard the S.S. Numidian. Although he intended to settle in Victoria, he was unable to find employment in the city and joined a survey crew working in the Fort Rupert area. He very soon found the work too demanding and returned to Victoria.
