Fonds consists of interviews with John Bruce, transcript, 1963-1965; diaries, 1911-1914, 1946-1962; miscellaneous, n.d., 1897, 1961-1966; and subject files, 1962.

The fonds contains photographs related to John W. Bruce and his association with various labour organizations.

The fonds also contains items from the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Indutry of the United States and Canada, Local 46 including a Toronto crest,a 70th anniversary ribbon and 2 delegates badges to the 29th annual convention in Kansas City, [1960-1966].

Bruce, John, 1876-1970 : A native of Australia and a plumber by trade, John Bruce came to Canada via South Africa in 1906. He became a member of Toronto Local 46 of the United Association of Journey men and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Steamfitting Industry. In 1910 he was elected general organizer for the United Association, a position which he held until 1960. Bruce helped to form the Social Democratic Party in 1908, was for several years president of the Independent Labour Party formed in 1917, and was later active in the Ontario branch of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.

He served on several government commissions, including the Appeal Board under the Industrial Disputes Investigation Act in World War I, the Royal Commission on Industrial Relations in 1919, and the National War Labour Board in World War II. Bruce was also involved in the development of the Polymer Corporation synthetic rubber plant in Sarnia, Ont., in World War II, and subsequently served for several years as a director of that company.
