Fonds consists of the typescript of a manuscript by Caldwell entitled "Ungava", plus additional notes, 1920; and correspondence of Caldwell with his family and other emplyees of the Hudson's Bay Company, 1913-1917. The letters contain descriptions of the life at various trading posts around the Ungava Bay, the wildlife, trapping techniques, the dress and lifestyles of native peoples, and company business.

Fonds also consists of graphic material including: photographs depicting fur trading in the Ungava District of Quebec; the Inuit of the Ungava District; glass plates and nitrate negatives depicting various views along the norteast coast of Hudson Bay and the Ungava District, George River, Koksok River, Riviere a la Baleine, personnel and posts of the Hudson's Bay Company, and automobile race tracks; and copy negatives depicting people and places in the Ungava District, Hudson's Bay Company trading posts, Inuit, and expeditions.

Caldwell, John F., 1892- : John F. Caldwell attended Foyle College, Londonderry, and subsequently joined the Fur Trade Department of the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1913 he was posted to Fort Chimo in Ungava Bay, Quebec. In early 1914 he was given charge of the trading post at George's River where he spent the remainder of his time with the Hudson's Bay Company. In late 1916, he returned to Northern Ireland and enlisted for service in the First World War. He later became a lawyer.
