Fonds consists of letters from Lee to his parents concerning his South African War service in the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment describing the South African landscape, training methods and conditions experienced by the Canadians, the Boers and their irregular war tactics, satisfaction at the Victory of Paarderberg and at victories when he was not present, and the medical treatment available for his enteric fever, 1899-1902; letters sent by his parents, sisters and friends detailing their lives in Quebec City and responding to the news conveyed to them by Lee, 1900; correspondence, and memorabilia including letters about Lee's military service, newspaper clippings, programmes for veterans' reunions, and a 1900 patriotic calendar, 1900-1968.

The fonds contains photographs showing views of Quebec City, 1899; embarkation for and return from South Africa of the 1st Canadian Contingent, 1899-1900, including one photo by O. Bertram Stubbs; interior of a military hospital, Wynborg, South Africa, 1900; 60th annual Jubilee Dinner honouring Canadian Boer War veterans, 24 May 1960; and views of Mombasa and Durban, Natal, 1900.

The fonds contains 17 Boer War postal covers sent to/from Frederick Lee bearing various Canadian Contingent and British Field Post Office postal markings, 1899-1901; and 2 postal covers bearing 1915 British Military censorship and field post office markings addressed to Fred. S. Lee, Quebec, Canada.

Also included is a print entitled "Storming the town and castle of St. Sebastian in Spain, Sept. 1813", engraved by M. Dubourg and John Heaviside Clark, 1813.

Included in horizontal storage: Commission as Paymaster of Samuel Crawford Hall, Royal Navy, 1868, container 2.

Lee, Frederick S., 1879-1968 : Frederick Lee was born in Quebec City and first worked as a page in the Department of Public Instruction, Government of Quebec. At the outbreak of the South African War, he was in the Queen's Own Canadian Hussars and as an enlistee transferred to the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment.

He sailed from Quebec City to South Africa on the S.S. Sardinian, arriving in 1899. After taking part in the Battle of Paardeberg, he was stricken with enteric fever and was repatriated to Canada.

After the war, he returned to his position with the Department of Public Instruction and in 1908 transferred to a position as pay clerk of the Treasury Department. He remained in that position for twenty-six years.
