Fonds consists of personal and family papers; correspondence; journals kept by Griffin concerning his personal life and work in the Library of Parliament; poetry; prose notes and clippings for articles and lectures by Griffin; scapbooks containing clippings from various newspapers. Also included are Griffin family papers, microfilm reel M-289; and extracts of general interest, 1905-1916 from the diaries of Martin Joseph Griffin, Joint-Librarian of Parliament. There are also microfilmed notes, verses and correspondence of Mary E. Griffin, Brian Meredith, Philip Griffin and Martin Joseph Griffin, 1894-1921, n.d., microfilm reel A-1086.

Griffin, Martin Joseph, 1847-1921 (family) : Martin Joseph Griffin was born in St. John's, Nfld. and attended St. Mary's College in Halifax, N.S. He was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1868. From 1868 to 1874, he served as editor of the Halifax Express and in 1874 he was an unsuccessful Conservative candidate for the Nova Scotia provincial legislature. He was editor of the Halifax Herald, 1874-1878, and of the Toronto Mail, 1881-1885, and he served as secretary of the Civil Service Commission, 1880-1885. He was appointed Parliamentary Librarian in 1885 and held this position until his retirement in 1920. Griffin's daughter, Mrs. C.P. Meredith, collected copies of his letters in preparation for a biography.

Correspondence, volumes 1-3, received in 1947 from Colonel C.P. Meredith. Journals, articles and miscellaneous papers, volumes 3-8, received in 1968 from Mrs. A. Garneau of Ottawa, Ont. Scrapbooks, volume 9-20, transferred in 1970 from the Library of Parliament. Volumes 21-23 received in 1986 from Brian Meredith. Microfilm of family papers, reel A-1086, received in 1979 through the London office. Microfilm of diaries from Mrs. C.P. Meredith, Ottawa, 1957.
