Dafoe, John Wesley, 1866-1944 : Journalist.

After spending eighteen years on the staffs of newspapers in Ottawa, Montreal, and Winnipeg, John Dafoe became editor of the Manitoba Free Press, in 1901, later known as the Winnipeg Free Press. Under his direction, the paper became recognized as one of the authoritative voices of Canadian public opinion, and Dafoe himself gained recognition as a force in the Nation's political and intellectual life.

He was a delegate to numerous Imperial Conferences and to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Between 1934 and 1944, Dafoe was chancellor of the University of Manitoba, and a member of the Royal Commission on Dominion-Provincial Relation (Rowell-Sirois Commission), 1937-1940. He authored, Laurier: A study in Canadian Politics, 1922, and Canada: An American Nation, 1935.
