The fonds consists of the records of H. Eric Bergman and material relating to him collected by his family after his death in 1958, as well as correspondence of his son, Eric J. Bergman, dating from the Second World War. The material is arranged in two series: H. Eric Bergman records, including a sub-series of posthumous material; and Eric J. Bergman correspondence.

Also included are art records and photographs of his emigration to Canada, career, recreation, and family life. File-level descriptions of each of the four photographic albums have also been created.

The records were formerly accessioned under the title Hans Erich Bergmann fonds.

Bergman, H. Eric, 1893-1958 : H. Eric Bergman was born Heinrich Erich Bergmann in 1893 in Dresden, Germany, where he studied at the Art and Trade School and began his career as a commercial artist. In 1913, he immigrated to Canada, changing his name to Henry Eric Bergman. After a brief spell in Toronto, he moved to Winnipeg to take up work in the art department at the printing firm of Brigden's, where he worked on Eaton's mail-order catalogue and met fellow artists Charles Comfort, Tom McLean and Harold Foster. He married Norma Mickler in 1922, and they became part of the larger art community in Winnipeg, including Walter J. Phillips and Alex Musgrove. Bergman began exhibiting his work in 1924 and became known for his printmaking, particularly his woodcuts and wood engravings. He was a member of the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, Canadian Society of Graphic Art and Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, and also exhibited internationally. He was president of the Society of Manitoba Artists, 1939-1940, and was a member of the Board of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. His work is held in galleries across Canada, as well as in the National Gallery of Canada. He died in 1958.

General note:

Most of the records were received from H. Eric Bergman's son, Eric J. Bergman of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1981. One document, a 1983 exhibition catalogue, was received in 1983 from the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
