Malhiot, Zéphirin, b. 1856 : Zéphirin Malhiot was born in Bécancour, Nicolet County, Lower Canada in 1856. He began his engineering career working on the construction of the Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa and Occidental Railway in 1876. From 1879 to 1886 he was engaged in survey and construction work with the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Lake Superior region. In 1887 after running as the Liberal candidate in Nicolet County against Sir Hector Langevin, he joined the survey crews working on the New York and Boston Rapid Transit Railway.

From 1888 to 1893 Malhiot worked on a number of survey and engineering enterprises including the Ontario and Rainy River Railway and the Sault Ste. Marie Water Power Company. Subsequently he operated his own engineering business in Fall River, Mass. In 1899 he was appointed the District Engineer for the Northwest by the Department of Public Works, a position he held until 1911.
