Fonds consists of manuscript entitled "Grandfather's War" and correspondence, photocopy, 1914-1918, 1946, 3 cm; correspondence and miscellaneous material all relating to Lighthall's military and air force career, original, 1914-1952, 2 cm. Fonds also consists of copies of 4 photographs, 1917-1918, depicting various aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force flown by W.S. Lighthall of Montreal, Que. in Egypt and Palestine; 3 photographs, 1940-1941, depicting R.C.A.F. Mobile Recruiting Unit, Ontario, ca. 1941; Lighthall presenting charter to Ottawa Optimist Air Cadet Flight, Ottawa, Ont., 20 November 1941.

Fonds also consists of copies of 4 photographs, 1917-1918, depicting various aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force flown by W.S. Lighthall, William Wilkes Schuyler, b. 1895 : William Wilkes Schuyler Lighthall, military officer, aviator, was born in Westmount, Que. and educated at McGill University, Montreal. He enlisted in 1914 with the Royal Canadian Dragoons and was sent to France. In 1915 Lighthall transferred to the 3rd Dorsetshire Regiment of the British Army. He served in Mesopotamia and India, and learned to fly in Palestine while with the Royal Flying Corps. Lighthall won the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1917.

Between the wars he was involved in commercial aviation. In 1927 he founded the Canadian Flying Club at Montreal. When war broke out in 1939, he returned to the R.C.A.F. as a recruiting officer and later became a senior administrator, then a Commanding Officer at the training schools at St. Marguerite, Que. and at Manning, Man. Lighthall retired from the R.C.A.F. in February 1945.
