Fonds consists of South African War correspondence between Sergeant H. Marsden of the British Army Pay Corps and his brother Major H.M. Marsden; three letters and their envelopes, plus an additional 19 envelopes all decorated with patriotic anti-Boer ink sketches; one parcel post receipt; one army rail pass; one small mess programme commemorating the cessation of the South African War; and a letter from Henry Bentley to E.L. Bentley, a relative of Major Marsden, 1865.

Marsden, Herbert Mangnall, 1874-1959 : Herbert Mangnall Marsden, military officer, was born at Bradford, Yorkshire, England, and served with the Canadian Militia, Winnipeg Rifles, 90th Regiment, 1901-1914. He was taken on strength of the C.E.F., in December 1914, as a quartermaster sergeant in the 44th Battalion, and later re-enlisted as a lieutenant in the 199th Battalion in November 1916. He served in France with the 8th Battalion, July 1917-March 1918. After the war, he served with the Winnipeg Light Infantry until his retirement in January 1933.
