Land register books, memoranda respecting grants and sales, surveys, plans, and other particulars of lots and land sales in the Red River Settlement. The registers and memoranda record names of land holders, measurements of their lots, acreage granted and includes information such as Indian agreements. The plans consist of sketches, rough maps and the accompanying verbal descriptions. The land sale books record the name of the lot holders and balances due.

Hudson's Bay Company : In 1810, coinciding with a reorganization of the Hudson's Bay Company, Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk proposed the establishment of a colony at Red River to provide provisions for the fur trade. Selkirk's colony was situated astride the major supply area of pemmican for the North West Company, it immediately encountered opposition which broke into open violence when Governor Miles Macdonell prohibited pemmican exports from the colony in 1814. The ensuing harassment of the settlers by the Nor'Westers resulted in the dispersal of the colony in 1815. By 1817, the settlement had been restored.

North West Company resistance was eventually neutralized by the coalition of 1821. However, administrative difficulties persisted. The report of the Select Committee of the House of Commons in 1857 recommended the termination of the company's rule. When Canadian surveyors entered the colony in preparation for the transfer of authority, Métis fears concerning their future status were sharply increased. The rebellion which broke out in 1869 signalled the complete collapse of the Hudson's Bay Company authority. The Métis government, led by Louis Riel, eventually established the terms of union with the Canadian government.
