LePan, Douglas, 1914-1998 : Douglas Valentine LePan, public servant and educator, born on 25 May 1914 at Toronto, Ont., was educated at the University of Toronto and Oxford University. He lectured at the University of Toronto, 1937-1938, and at Harvard University, 1938-1941. He served in World War II, as an education adviser to General A.G.L. McNaughton, 1942-1943 and later as an artillery officer until his discharge in 1945. In that year, he joined the Department of External Affairs and until 1948 was on the staff of the Canadian High Commission in London. After a one year leave of absence for study, he served as special assistant to the Minister of External Affairs, Lester B. Pearson, during 1950-1951.

From 1951 to 1955, he was Minister Counsellor in Washington, after which he served for three years as secretary and Director of Research for the Royal Commission on Canada's Economic Prospects. He was Assistant Undersecretary of State for External Affairs, 1958-1959 before becoming Professor of Literature at Queen's University in 1959, a position he held until 1964. He returned to the University of Toronto as principal of University College, 1964-1970, and as professor, 1970-1979.

He has twice won the Governor-General's Award for Literature, for poetry in 1954 and for fiction in 1964. LePan died on 27 November 1998.
