Fonds consists of personal papers, correspondence and speeches dealing with Mr. Justice Batshaw's activities on behalf of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, the judiciary and Zionist affairs, including letters from Rene Cassin, Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 1968, and three scrapbooks of clippings and letters.

Batshaw, Harry, 1902-1984 : Harry Batshaw, judge, born in 1902 at Dubrovno, Russia, immigrated to Canada in 1905. He graduated from McGill University, Faculty of Law in 1924. He practised law in Montreal for 25 years, before being appointed to the Superior Court Bench of Quebec in 1950. He was the first member of the Jewish faith to be appointed to a High Court in Canada. In 1940, he was appointed a King's Counsel.

Among his numerous communal activities, he was president of Canadian Young Judea, 1931-1934, head of the public relations committee of the Zionist Organization of Canada, 1944-1950, president and founder of the Canadian Friends of the Alliance Israelite Universelle and Quebec Co-Chairman of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. In 1962, he was awarded the Medal of Merit by the Government of France and in 1976 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
