Fonds consists in part of manuscripts of literary works by Jack Gray including notes, drafts and final versions, as well as related correspondence, programmes, contracts, production schedules, research material, and clippings concerning stage plays, television plays, radio plays, film scripts and other writings. Other records pertain to personal correspondence, autobiographical information as well as an index of Canadian plays. Also found are numerous files pertaining to the Association of Canadian Television and Radio Artist (ACTRA) created or maintained by Jack Gray while a member and director, files relating to the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA), The League for Canadian Communications, the 1985 Banff International Symposium on the Arts as well as many Canadian and international arts organizations and unions.

The fonds notably contains photographs from Jack Gray's play "Louisbourg", Neptune Theatre, Halifax, N.S., 1964. The fonds also contains sound recordings of the following: theatre productions of the plays Susanna, Agnes and Ruth, [ca. 1960-1976], Ride a pink horse, [ca. 1960-1976], and Clap hands, 1963; a television program about the CBC entitled Issues and broadcast by TVOntario, 1977; the activities of the Canadian Theatre Centre and theatre in Canada in general, [ca. 1960-1970].

Gray, Jack, 1927-2017 : Jack (John Russel) Gray, born in 1927 at Detroit, Mich., received his education from Queen's University and the University of Toronto. He studied theatre in England, 1960-1962, after being associated with the Stage Society in Ottawa and working as stage manager for the Straw Hat Players. He returned to Canada to become administrative director and resident playwright of the Neptune Theatre, Halifax, 1963. He spent the next four years in England but settled again in Canada in 1968. He was secretary-general of the Canadian Theatre Centre, 1971-1973, and has been involved with the Association of Canadian Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) since 1970, including as a national director, he was nominated Chairman of the Writers' Council when it was created in 1971 and was elected National President of the Association in 1978, a post he held until 1982. Gray was one of the founders of the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds in 1986 and was instrumental in the creation of the Writers Guild of Canada in 1991. In 2002 he was awarded the WGC's "Writers Block Award for Service to Canadian Screenwriters".

A free-lance writer, Gray has worked extensively in radio and television in Canada and England as well as for numerous Canadian magazines notably Maclean's Magazine and the Star Weekly. His stage plays have been produced at the Crest Theatre, Stratford Festival, Neptune Theatre and St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, among other theatres, and he is the author of the screenplay for the film "A Quiet Day in Belfast". Gray was married to Canadian actress Araby Lockhart. He was afterwards married in second marriage with Sandra Macdonald.

Because the Gray papers were transferred to Library and Archives Canada in a number of separate accessions, there are some discrepancies in their organization and similar material may be found in different series.
