Fonds consists of two files kept by Brigadier C.C. Mann while chief of staff to General Crerar, 1st Canadian Army. One file contains memoranda, messages, directives and conference notes, 22 July 1944-6 June 1945, many of these signed by General Crerar. The second file is copy no. 14 "Operation Totalize" containing orders, notes, plans and appreciations 4-7 August 1944. The file contains propaganda leaflets in Russian, German and Polish, with some English translations.

Mann, Churchill, 1904- : Churchill Mann, military officer, was born in 1904 at Nutley, N.J., and immigrated to Canada in 1910. He attended Upper Canada, College, the Royal Military College, and the University of Toronto. He joined the Governor General's Body Guard (now the Governor General's Horse Guards), a militia cavalry regiment, as a lieutenant in 1923, and remained with that unit until his commissioning in the Permanent Force Royal Canadian Dragoons, in 1927. He was promoted to captain in 1937, and completed the Militia Staff Course in that year.

At the outbreak of war, he served with his unit until December 1939, when he was appointed general staff officer 3 (intelligence) with the 1st Canadian Division, proceeding overseas that year. In July 1940, he was promoted to major, and during the year served as GSO 2 (I) with 1 Canadian Corps. Promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1941, he took command of the 14th Canadian Hussars (then known as the 8 Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment), relinquishing that appointment when he became GSO 1 (senior staff officer) with 2 Canadian Division. From 1942 to 1943, he was brigadier, general staff at the Headquarters of 1 Canadian Corps, from 1943 to 1944, he had command of the 7 Canadian Infantry Brigade, and from 1944 to the end of the war, he was chief of staff to General H.D.G. Crerar.
