Fonds documents the activities of the United Transportation Union (UTU) including lobbying, labour relations, collective agreements, organizing, certification, administration of the union, and other activities. Fonds includes legacy records of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen (BLFE) and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT)., Fonds also contains panoramic photographs depicting delegates attending BRT conventions (1931-1954). Photos were taken by Cecil Thomson Studio, Mile High Studio, Ertler Photo, Miller-Ertler Studios, and Marchada Photo.

United Transportation Union : The United Transportation Union (UTU) was formed in 1969 with the merger of four operating railway workers' unions: Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen (B of LF&E), Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT), Order of Railway Conductors of America (ORC), and Switchmen's Union of North America (SUNA). These unions had been founded in the United States in the late nineteenth century, primarily as insurance societies, and they soon spread into Canada. Until the introduction of the diesel locomotive and the relative decline of rail transport in the middle of the twentieth century, they were among the largest unions in North America.

In 2008, the Canadian UTU merged with the Teamsters and became part of the Teamsters Rail Division. In 2011, in the United States in 2011, the UTU merged with the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association (SMWIA) and established the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART).

Part 1 provides file level information: file list for volumes 1 to 274: volume number, file number, file title and date. General note:

Presented in 1975, 1976, 1979, 1985 and 1989 from various officers of the Union. A small accession was received from the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) in 1976. The President's subject files of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen were donated in 1978 by the New York State School of Industrial and Labour Relations, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.

There are 24 series in the fonds. The records of the UTU are arranged in the following 9 series: Administrative records; Agreements, Letters of Understanding and Ritual of Subordinate Lodges; Amalgamation, Mergers, and Re-Unification; Conferences, Committees, Conventions and Projects; Constitutions and By-Laws; Lobbying; Manuals and Reports; Organizing and Certification; Pre-Unification; and Railway Lines and Terminal, Yard and Railway Closures., The records of the BLFE are arranged in 10 series and the records of the BRT in 4 series. Oversize records of both the BLFE and BRT are arranged in 1 series.
