Fonds consists of textual records series, n.d., 1933-1989, relating to Dyson's working career as a social worker and consultant.

Fonds also contains one portfolio of maps, October 1964, relating to the Agricultural Rehabilitation and Development Act (ARDA) of June 1961. The ARDA program was designed to alleviate low income levels, high under-employment and unemployment, poor educational attainments, inadequate health services and lack of social amenities in disadvantaged rural areas of Canada. The maps are entitled Index of counties and census divisions, Distribution of population, Low income farms, Low rural non-farm wages, Low urban wages, Low non-farm family incomes, Registrations for employment, Low educational levels, Infant mortality.

Dyson, William A., 1929-1991 : William A. Dyson, 1929-1991, public servant, was born in Montreal and educated locally. He received his masters in social work from the University of Montreal in 1952 and his doctorate from Brandeis University in 1962. Dyson was a well-known social worker and consultant with his principal focus being socio-economic analysis leading to policy and program formulation. He began his career with the Montreal Federation of Catholic Charities in 1949 and served as executive director of that organization from 1966-1969. Dyson conceived the Canada Assistance Plan while working for the Department of National Health and Welfare in 1963. In 1966 he was appointed to the Castonguay-Nevpeu Commission inquiry into health and welfare in Quebec. He was the first chairman of the National Council of Welfare from 1969-1972. Dyson was appointed in 1969 by Prime Minister Trudeau as a policy advisor to the Privy Council on social policy.

Dyson served as the executive director of the Vanier Institute of the Family from 1972-1983. He received a medal for community service from Queen Elizabeth II in 1979. Dyson has published many articles and other works on economic and social policy, community organization, family life, the aging, corrections, international social programs, as well as analyses of new modes of working with the current dynamics of societal and cultural change. He co-authored a book with William Nichols, The Informal Economy: Where People Are the Bottom Line, which was published in 1983. Dyson was appointed by the Minister of the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs in 1985 to negotiate the first bilateral agreement dealing with native self-government in respect to social services.
