Fonds consists of photographs of activites and personnel of the 1913-1918 Canadian Arctic Expedition and Southern Party. Textual material consists of K.G. Chipman's instructions from the Geological Survey (1913), personal diaries (June 1913-June 1916) and three confidential letters to his family, 1914-1915. The fonds also includes correspondence and reports by Chipman, John R. Cox, R.M. Anderson and J.J. O'Neil relating to the Canadian Arctic Expedition (1913-1916). Also included are scrapbooks of the expedition, Vilhjalmur Stefannson and Chipman's career (1913-1968).

Chipman, K.G. (Kenneth Gordon), 1884-1974 : Kenneth Gordon Chipman, topographer, was born in Berwick, N.S. After graduating in mining engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1908, he joined the Geological Survey of Canada. He served on the scientific staff of the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-1916. As geographer and second-in-command to Dr. R.M. Anderson, he helped to map 1,200 miles of the Arctic around Coronation Gulf. Chipman left the Arctic in Aug. 1916. In 1941, he became Chief Topographical Engineer in the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. Chipman retired from government service in 1949.
