Series consists of records documenting a wide variety of the activities carried out by the Fort Frances District Office and its predecessors. The series includes loose correspondence and letterbooks relating to a wide variety of administrative functions of the Fort Frances District Office. Subjects include annuities, land sales, membership, agency accounts, elections, education, supplies, estate, health services and general agency administration. Some routine financial administration records and American correspondence are also included. The correspondence is arranged chronologically by year.

Also included are records and letterbooks from the Manitoba Superintendency, as well as records from the Couchiching, Rat Portage and Fort Frances agencies.

Volume 14993 includes records of birth and death registrations, as well as Treaty Annuity payments of the various bands within the Fort Frances District.

Indian and Eskimo Affairs Program (Canada). Fort Frances District Office : Following the creation of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development in 1966, agencies were joined to form larger administrative units called districts. The Fort Frances Agency became the Fort Frances District Office 1 April 1972. The district office was created to assist in the administration of various bands in Northwestern Ontario. At that time, these bands included the following: Big Island (1972-1988); Big Grassy (1972-1988); Couchiching (1972-1988); Lac La Croix (1973); Naicatchewenin (1972-1988); Nicickousemenecaning (1972-1988); Ojibways of Onegaming (1982-1988); Rainy River (1972-1988); Sabaskong (1972-1982); Seine River (1972-1988); and Stangecoming (1972-1988). The Sabaskong Band changed its name to the Ojibways of Onegaming in 1982. On 1 April 1988 Fort Frances District Office was absorbed into the Western District.
