Le Collège Militaire Royal à St-Jean : In 1952 the Collège militaire royal à Saint-Jean (CMR)in Quebec was established for francophone officer cadets in all three military services. Part of the College was built on the site of old French Fort originally established in 1666. The role of CMR was to educate and train officer cadets and commissioned officers for careers in the Canadian Forces and was an important factor in the movement to recruit more Francophones in the Canadian Armed Forces. Originally, CMR was to provide a three year bilingual course beyond junior matriculation, but in the period of 1969-1972 its curriculum was expanded to provide university degrees in Administration, and Arts and Sciences. Until this time, cadets completed their first three years at Saint-Jean and their last two at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston. CMR was to be a bilingual institution and there were discussions in the mid 1960s of making it French-language only, although it was never carried out. Between 1975 and 1978, CFB St. Jean was renovated with a fifty-one million dollar budget and its support functions greatly increased with regards to CMR. CMR was closed in 1995 and its training and education functions migrated to RMC which was shortly thereafter renamed RMC/CMR. RG 24 General Inventory
