This is a preliminary record summarizing textual records in the linked accessions, as well as the identification pins in R1207 volume 633.

Sub-series consists of desk files of Dr. D.C. MacPhail, Director of the Division of Mechanical Engineering. Although these records seem to have been collected by Dr. Macphail, the majority concern Dr. Parkin's management of the Division of Mechanical Engineering in its early years. Included is an assortment of documents on the scientific and non-scientific staffing of the division, the running of the Instruments and Model Shop, and the maintenance of the "Shop". Also included are files for projects such as the Port aux Basques harbour, fluid mechanics, and the Ripple Rock project on Seymour Narrows, British Columbia.

Sub-series also consists of photos from the National Research Council, presumably collected by Dr. D.C. MacPhail. Subjects include, but are not limited to: dust explosions in grain elevators in Port Arthur, aeronautical research at the NRC, the Tailless Glider (Pterodactyl) built by the NRC, research on hydrofoils, imperial typewriter, explosive lab, cafeteria at the NRC, Dr. Macphail, construction of NRC buildings, HD-4 hydrofoil, and research and development by Blohm und Voss entreprise in Germany during the Second World War (notably the BV 138).There is also a progress schedule of the Uplands Flight Research Development.

Sub-series also consists of 70 pins from ca. 1941-1942, that are are mainly but not wholly employee identification pins which have been retained as evidence of the personnel operations within the branch, and as examples of material which is rarely found in government fonds. Of the estimated 70 pins, 4 are large pins for guards at the NRC's Montreal Road Laboratories, 2 are small round metal pendants with identification number, and the remainder consist of small pins that read "N.R.L.," an identification number, and the date. Order R1207 volume 633.

National Research Council of Canada. Division of Mechanical Engineering : Dr.D.C. Macphail served as a research scientist and as assistant director of the Division of Mechanical Engineering between 1946 and 1957, before becoming director of the division, a post which he held for over twenty years.
