Sub-series consists of general administrative papers relating to land grants to volunteers in the South Africa War. The Volunteer Bounty Act (7-8 Edw., c. 67, 1908) applied to all residences of Canada, male or female, who volunteered to serve the British army in South Africa during the Boer War (from 1899 to 1902). The Act granted to all volunteers (or his/her legal representative if the volunteer died sometime between the date of enlistment and December 31, 1910) two adjoining quarter sections (320 acres) of Dominion lands opened for homestead entry. The grant was subject to the conditions that entry was filed by December 31, 1910, and that the grantee had begun to reside upon and cultivate the land within six months after the deadline. The grant was also subject to all the terms and conditions of homestead required by The Dominion Lands Act. In lieu of a land grant, the volunteer could receive scrip in the amount of

All land grants and scrip offered under the provisions of this Act were to be awarded by the Department of the Interior upon receipt of a warrant issued, in favour of the applicant, by the Minister of Militia and Defence. Amendments to the original Volunteer Bounty Act were passed by Parliament as: 9-10 Edw., c. 60, 1910; 2 Geo. V, c. 52, 1912; 3-4 Geo. V, c. 55, 1913; and 4-5 Geo. V., c. 18, 1914.

Amendment 9-10 Edw., c. 60, 1910 extended the deadline for filing an entry or for taking scrip to December 31, 1911. It also required the grantee to establish a residence and begin cultivating the land within six months of the entry date, rather than the application deadline date. Amendment 2 Geo. V, c. 52, 1912 extended the deadline for filing an entry or for taking scrip to December 31, 1912. As well, under section eight, a grantee or his/her substitute was given the opportunity of surrendering to the Crown all his/her rights under The Volunteer Bounty Act for the sum of
