Quebec and Lake St. John Railway : The Quebec and Lake St. John Railway Company was incorporated under Quebec Act, 32 Vic., Cap. 53 of 5 April 1869 as the Quebec and Gosford Railway Company. On 24 December 1870 the name was changed to the Quebec and Lake St. John Railway Company. In 1883 it obtained the right to build into the Lake St. John region. . By the 1880s, a railway was considered to be of the utmost necessity. Actively supported by the Church, the Legislative Assembly and local residents, construction began in 1885 under contractor H.J. Beemer. As construction progressed, the railway began to operate in bits and pieces. The railway finally reached Roberval in 1888. A 249 mile line from Loretteville near Quebec to Roberval and Chicoutimi was constructed between 1881 and 1893. Upon completion the railway covered an area of 300 miles (about 485 km).

Governments at all levels were supportive of the railway. The railway received substantial grants from both the federal and provincial governments for a total of $8,700 per mile. There was an additional $2,500 per mile from the City of Quebec, which also invested $125,000 in the company's common stock. The province threw in generous land grants amounting to 1,871,950 acres, some of which was sold back to the government.

Mackenzie and Mann, owners of the Canadian Northern Railway Company obtained control of the company in 1906 and constructed an additional 40 mile branch line to La Tuque. In 1914, the ownership passed to the Canadian Northern Railway Company. After Canadian National Railways was incorporated in 1919, ownership was transferred to that company.

While sections of the railway still exist, most of the tracks have been pulled up. The Saint-Raymond-Rivière-à-Pierre section (35.6 km) was abandoned in 1989, that of Valcartier in Saint-Raymond (29 km) in 1995 and that of Limoilou in Valcartier (26 km) in 1997; these sections became a bicycle path (the Cheminots corridor) between Quebec and Rivière-à-Pierre. The route from Montreal to Lac Saint-Jean is still owned by CN, and uses the QLSJR tracks from Rivière-à-Pierre.
