Collection consists of an original map, published in 1715, entitled: "A New and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great Britain on the Continent of North America, Containing Newfoundland, New Scotland, New England, New York, New Jersey, Pensilvania (sic), Maryland, Virginia and Carolina" drawn "According to the Newest and most Exact Observations by Herman Moll, Geographer," and dedicated to the Honourable Walter Dowglass, Esqr., 1711.

Collection also contains an American Bank Note Company 3 cent postal stationery envelope essay, 1877, in the form of an embossed die proof; a print depicting mail conveyance between Touchwood and Clarkes Crossing during the 1885 Northwest Rebellion, extracted from Souvenir number I, the Canadian pictorial & illustrated war news; as well as 8 postage stamp essays hand-painted by Charles Mack, a former designer with American Bank Note Company, New York.

The stamps include a 2 cents war memorial issue, 1 dollar sailing vessels issue, 5 cents Prince of Wales issue, 8 cents King George V issue, 50 cents royal yacht Britannia - 1935 King George V Silver Jubilee issue, and 3 versions of the 1 cent, 1937 King George VI definitive postage stamp.

Nickle, Sam 1912 or 1913-1994 : Sam C. Nickle was a native of Winnipeg who settled in Calgary with his family, wife Rosemary (also a philatelist of note) and daughter. He worked in the oil industry since the early 1930's, and was Vice-President of Canadian Gridoil Ltd. Mr. Nickle belonged to major Canadian petroleum societies and was an active member of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. He served in Canada's Military Intelligence during World War II, and was a Calgary Highlander. He established the Nickle Map Service Ltd. in 1935.

Sam Nickle first became interested in stamps during childhood. He first exhibited his collections at the YMCA Boys Fair in 1925 in Calgary. His philatelic interests were Canadiana. At an early stage, he became interested in Small Queen's in the collection of Dr. Manson, but the latter persuaded Nickle to change his collecting interests to the stamps and postal history of Canada. Over the years, Mr. Nickle centred his collecting around the Province of Canada, 1851-1867, especially early military mails, and pence issues. As well as stamps, he also collected silver, glass, history, maps, and prints.

Sam Nickle was also involved in philatelic organizations, serving 15 years on the National Postal Museum Advisory Committee and was on the Canada Post Stamp Advisory Committee. He was a past President of the Calgary Philatelic Society, a life member of the British North America Philatelic Society (BNAPS), the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, and a member of the Order of the Beaver from BNAPS. During his collecting years Nickle was a frequent exhibitor at BNAPS where he won several medals, hosted BNAPEX 66, 73 and 85, and served on local, national, and international juries.

The map was the first to make reference to a postal system in North America.

Historique de la conservation :

The map (accession 1992-198 DAP) and print (accession 1992-126 DAP) were acquired from Sam C. Nickle, Calgary, Alberta by the National Postal Museum (NPM accession 1985-091). They were later acquired by the Canadian Postal Archives (and initially included in accession 1989-565)., The American Bank Note Company 3 cent postal stationary envelope essay, 1877, in the form of an embossed die proof (accession 1990-037 DAP) had been in the "Scenic" collection of Sam C. Nickle. It was acquired by the Canadian Postal Archives from a stamp dealer., The postage stamp essays (accessions 1993-032 and 1993-034 DAP) were originally part of the Scenic Collection of Essays and Proofs of Sam C. Nickle and were purchased at auction.
