Series consists of maps, architectural and technical drawings, acquired or maintained by the National Archives of Canada. Series includes:

158 architectural drawings of the downtown archival buildings in Ottawa which consist of working copies of drawings for Dept. of Public Works contracts for the Archives building on Sussex Street, the Wellington Street Library and Archives building, and for the Records Centre in Tunney's Pasture. The majority are preliminary sketches, perspective drawings, fittings and equipment layouts and schedules for the Wellington Street building. Also included are structural revisions to the Sussex Street building, a site plan for the hostel, plans for the War Trophy and Archives building on Sussex Street, a sketch of a showcase entitled "History of Canadian Paper Money", and a plan of the Special Collections Room of the National Library of Scotland. Many of the drawings were prepared by the architectural firm of Mathers & Haldenby.

30 architectural drawings of the National Archives and National Library building, Wellington Street, Ottawa consist of preliminary floor plans and electrical layouts by the firm Mathers & Haldenby, architects.

20 architectural drawings of cottages contined in issues of the National Builder, designs by Geo. Garnsey, architect. The drawings consist of supplementary plans and drawings contained in issues 1887, 1890 and 1891.

60 architectural drawings of Laurier House, 335 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa. This group of drawings is a reference collection showing renovation work done by Sproat and Rolph in 1922, the Dept. of Public Works from 1951 to 1976, and Rysavy & Rysavy in 1973.

The Atlas of the British Empire is a reproduction from the original made for Her Majesty Queen Mary's doll's house by Edward Stanford Ltd. [London : Stanford, 1924], cartographers to the King (publisher's label inside front flyleaf).

National Archives and Library Building, Wellington Street - architectural drawings : Items #1-15 are stamped : Mathers & Haldenby, architects.
Plans of downtown archival buildings, Ottawa - cartographic material: Blueline prints are fading and item #114 need repairs to tears; architectural, technical drawings: most of the blueline prints are fading and items #139 and 150 need repairs.
Plans of Laurier House, Ottawa - architectural drawings : each plan of items #18-22 is on two sheets.

Note on the state of conservation:

Architectural drawings : Some items have tears along the edges.
Plans of Laurier House: Items #17-22 are mounted on heavier paper to prevent further tearing.

Custodial history:

RG37M 86703/3 - transferred in April 1986 from the Public Archives Library.
RG37M 85603/54 - transferred in Oct. 1985 from Building Services, Public Archives of Canada.
RG37M 81203/57 - atlas was transferred in 1927 to the Public Archives of Canada and subsequently transferred in Jan. 1982 from the Federal Archives Divison, RG37, vol. 144.
RG37M 890704 - presumed to be transferred from the Archives administration office, but no date of transfer is known.
RG37M 81203/15 - transferred in 1981 from Laurier House.

Plans of Laurier House, Ottawa, items 1-16 and 23-27 have been microfilmed, NMC 130015-130035.

Location of duplicates note:

Duplicates of Laurier House plans are in the possession of the Curator of Laurier House.

Original extent note:

Plans of downtown archival buildings - originally received 356 items, but 85 items were disposed as duplicates or lacking archival value. An additional 106 items were microfilmed, and the originals destroyed because they were on poor quality paper.

Dates of creation note:

For the Atlas of the British Empire, publication date is from British Museum catalogue., The drawings of downtown archival buildings, Ottawa range of 1920-1965 refers to the dates of the original drawings of the processed accession of 271 items, before microfilming took place.
