Collection includes prints of Quebec, Halifax and Belle Isle, France, from three series of prints produced after on-the-spot sketches by Richard Short (flourishing 1734-after 1766). Richard Short was a British naval officer who served under the command of Vice-Admiral Saunders and was present at the siege of Quebec. Twelve prints of Quebec were issued in 1761. A set of six prints after his drawings depicting Halifax was later issued in 1764. Inscriptions on these prints indicate that Dominic Serres (1722-1793), who was appointed Marine Painter to the King of England in 1780, produced paintings from the sketches that were used for the engravings. In 1777 another set of prints was issued after Short's sketches, depicting the British capture of Belle Isle, France by Admiral Keppel in 1761. It is thought that all three sets of prints were a collaborative effort between Short and Serres. There are thirty prints from the Quebec set, acquired under four separate accessions (1989-283, 1989-286, 1990-055, 1990-056); eleven prints from the Halifax set, acquired under four separate accessions (1990-053, 1990-054, 1990-056, 1990-057); and seven prints from the Belle Isle set, acquired under one accession (1990-056). The watercolour, date unknown, depicts an interior view of the Recollets Friars' Church, Quebec, burned in 1796, copied after Short by an unknown artist. The two reproductions are of A view of the Treasury and Jesuits College and A view of the Bishop's house with the ruins as they appear in going down the hill ...", both from engravings after Short.

Short, Richard, fl. 1754-1766 : Richard Short (fl. 1754-1766), naval officer and topographer in Halifax in 1759; went to Québec as purser on H.M.S. Prince of Orange; engaged in British action against Québec, and with Wolfe's army on Plains of Abraham; was connected with Quebec Garrison 1759-1760. Richard Short produced on-the-spot sketches of the conquered city of Quebec, at the command of Vice-Admiral Saunders. Twelve prints after these drawings were issued by Thomas Jefferys in 1761. It is believed that the prints were a collaborative effort between Richard Short and Dominic Serrres (1722-1793), Serres producing paintings after the drawings, from which engravings were made, as evidenced by paintings of Quebec by Serres which are now in the collection of the National Archives of Canada. The two collaborated on a set of prints of Halifax issued in 1764, and on a third set of prints issued in 1777 illustrating the capture of Belle Isle, France in 1761 under Admiral Keppel. The last two print sets bear inscriptions indicating Short did the drawings, which Serres later painted, from which the engravings were made. Schoenherr, Douglas. Catalogue entry for Dominic Serres. Custodial history:

The prints are views of Quebec, Halifax and Belle Isle, France and have come in under seven separate accessions dating from 1921 to 1932. Most of the sources of the prints are unknown, although some were acquired from Kennedy & Co., N.Y. (13 Quebec views, 1 Halifax view). The watercolour and the reproductions were acquired through Dr. Arthur Doughty in 1934.
