Series consists of miscellaneous correspondence and subject files. The variety of topics included in this correspondence is broad. Some volumes bring together documents from such a wide date range that the provenance of the records in them crosses geo-political jurisdictions; a single volume may, for example, contain documents dating from Lower Canada, the Province of Canada and the Dominion of Canada.

The records in this series were received at the National Archives as an unorganized mass without any discernible order and were given arrangement in piecemeal fashion. They were not included within the "G" Series arrangement schema into which were included so many other of the early records transferred from the Office of the Governor General. The reason for this is not known. The identity of these records was not well recognized and the relationships to records in other series within the fonds were imperfectly understood for long periods, such that the opportunity to reconstruct original order was lost. At some point (see the explanation found in the 1953 published inventory for RG 7, p.10) the majority of the documents were organized by subject and by the various offices of the colonial governments from which the correspondence originated. This arrangement schema could not accommodate all the records in the series, however, and some were simply left as miscellaneous loose papers and arranged chronologically. The arrangement presented here is, therefore, somewhat artificial. Further investigation is required to identify the records and to determine relationships with other records within the fonds.

Availability of other formats note:

Many records in this series are available on microfilm. Microfilming of volumes 1-82 was carried out in 1981. The contents of volumes 83-89, 96 (part), and 97-101 have not been microfilmed. Further details are provided in the relevant sub-series descriptions.
