Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Office of the Minister of National Health and Welfare. The series includes correspondence with associations, organizations and commissions; office files; income security correspondence; correspondence to the minister on the de-indexing of pensions; briefing notes to the minister and staff; ministerial correspondence; and records of the Civil Defence Co-ordinator.

The series is arranged into four sub-series based on the way in which records were maintained by the Office. Most recent material is found within the sub-series for records maintained in a registry by the Ministerial Correspondence Unit. A second sub-series consists of an ad-hoc grouping of correspondence to the Minister pertaining to the de-indexing of pensions, from 1985. A third sub-series consists of records maintained in the registry system used for the "Minister's Office - general files" prior to 1980. A fourth sub-series consists of a collection of records pertaining to the Minister's activities as Civil Defence Co-ordinator.

Researchers are cautioned that much material is at the accession level; for this reason physical extents and date ranges in series and sub-series descriptive records have been modified to include material at the accession level.
