Canada. Health Protection Branch. Field Operations Directorate : Known formerly as the Bureau of Operations of the Food and Drug Directorate, the Field Operations Directorate came into being in January 1972. The Directorate was the enforcement arm of the Health Protection Branch, responsible for surveillance and corrective activities to ensure the compliance of food, drugs and medical devices with the Food and Drug Act and its Regulations. These activities (which included inspection of food, drugs and medical devices in response to consumer complaints, inspection of pharmacies, manufacturers and distributors, seizure and prosecution, and the application of Good Manufacturing Practices) were carried out by staff at headquarters in Ottawa and five regional offices across Canada (Atlantic, Québec, Ontario, Central [Manitoba, Saskatchewan, NWT], and Western [British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon]). Following the transfer of inspection services from the Bureau of Dangerous Drugs to the Field Operations Directorate in 1991, all field operation functions relating to drugs were transferred back to the control of the Drugs Directorate in 1995.
