Fonds consists of photographs relating to the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), held in Toronto, Ontario, showing activities, events, visitors, etc.

The fonds also originally included further photographs of the CNE grounds, exhibits and shows, and views of Toronto. Two accessions of this material were de-accessioned to the CNE Archives, Exhibition Place in July 2000.

Fonds also consists of medallic objects including 8 CNE plaquettes portraying Governor-General Alexander (1949), Prime Minister St. Laurent (1950), Lester B. Pearson (1956), Lt. Governor Breithaupt (1957), Lord Thompson (1966), Vincent Massey (1967), and Ontario Premier John Roberts (1968); 2 CNE award medals portraying Governor-General Roland Michener (1971) and the Duke of Argyll (1972); 2 CNE Staff Badges (1957,1967); 3 CNE Committee Badges, Women's Department (1961,1968,1971); 4 CNE Guest Badges (1963,1964,1966); 2 CNE Member Metro Council Badges (1970,1972); and a CNE Honourary Director's Badge (1968). Also included are 10 CNE medals (1963-1071, 1974), 4 unidentified medals, and a CNE award (1928), possibly designed by Emmanull Hahn.

In addition, fonds includes sound tracks for the films They call me ex; and Show window of the nation (1934).

Canadian National Exhibition (Toronto, Ont.) : The Canadian National Exhibition officially started in 1846 as an agricultural fair and evolved into an exhibition which was known until the early twentieth century as the Toronto Industrial Exhibition. Today it is one of the largest annual fairs in North America. The CNE, held annually for 18 days prior to and including Labour Day, attracts over 1.4 million visitors each year. Over the years it has showcased many firsts, including the first electrically lit fair in 1882, the oldest existing sound on record, produced by Thomas Edison at the fair in 1888, and Canada's first colour TV broadcast, emanating from the 1962 Ex. General note:

Photographs in accessions 1971-125 (NPC) and 1971-273 (NPC) were acquired in 1971 from the Canadian National Exhibition. Photographs in accessions 1970-204 (NPC) and 1971-046 (NPC) were de-accessioned to the CNE, Exhibition Place, Toronto in July 2000. Medallic objects were acquired between 1974 and 1978 from Charlton Numismatic of Toronto, Frank Rose Enterprises of Toronto, and Mr. Freeman Clowery of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Moving image material was acquired in 1984 from Richard Irvine, Film Archivist, Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario.
