Fonds consists of Mabel Lockerby's correspondence, printed material and family papers, and posthumous material collected by her cousin Gwen Floud. Also included are artworks by Mabel Lockerby, as well as items by a number of her friends.

Lockerby, Mabel, 1882-1976 : Mabel Lockerby was born in Montreal on 13 March 1882, the daughter of a wholesale grocer, Alexander Lockerby, and his wife, Barbara Cox. After attending the Montreal High School for Girls, she began studying art under William Brymner and Maurice Cullen at the Art Association of Montreal, where her fellow students included Mabel May, Emily Coonan and Kathleen Morris. She exhibited in the Art Association's spring exhibitions regularly from 1914 until 1956. During the First World War, she served as a volunteer with the YMCA.

In 1920 Lockerby was elected to the Beaver Hall Group and served as its secretary in 1921, while A.Y. Jackson served as its president. The group shared studio space on Beaver Hall Hill, in a studio established by Lilias Torrance Newton, Randolph Hewton and Edwin Holgate. The Beaver Hall Group, or, variously, the Beaver Hall Hill Group, was notable for the number of women artists it included, among them Mabel May, Anne Savage, Sarah Robertson, Nora Collyer, Emily Coonan, Prudence Heward, Kathleen Morris and Ethel Seath, all of whom were former students of William Brymner. Although the Beaver Hall Hill Group did not last long formally, the association of many of its female members did, as they continued to maintain their friendships and paint together, often serving as subjects in one another's paintings.

Following her exposure with the Beaver Hall Hill Group, Mabel Lockerby was invited to exhibit with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, at the exhibitions of Canadian artists at Wembley in England, and with the Group of Seven in Toronto. Her work was purchased by the National Gallery of Canada. She became a member of the Canadian Group of Painters and the Contemporary Arts Society. In 1941 she was given a joint show at the Art Gallery of Toronto with Marian Scott, Kathleen Morris and Pegi Nicol MacLeod. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts mounted a group show of women artists, including Lockerby, Nora Collyer, Kathleen Morris, Anne Savage and Ethel Seath, in 1950 and held another exhibition featuring Lockerby's work, along with that of Ethel Seath and Frances-Anne Johnston, in 1952. Lockerby's work was included in an exhibition of Canadian Women Artists at the Riverside Museum, New York, in 1947, as well as in international exhibitions in London, England, in 1951 and Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1954.

Lockerby died on 1 May 1976.
