Recherche dans la collection - Judicial records of the appeal process and investigation into the administration of justice in the Court of Common Pleas [textual record]

Although most of the records in this series came into the custody of the Library and Archives of Canada by means of transfer in 1906 from the Office of the Secretary of State of Canada, at least one document (in vol. 1) bears an acquisition stamp indicating that it was acquired in 1952 from a private source.

Under the Record Group schema adopted in 1950, the records in this series had been included within RG 4 (Records of the Provincial and Civil Secretaries, Quebec, Lower Canada and Canada East), series B16. However, they have since, and for some time, been recognized as being properly records of the Executive Council of the Province of Quebec and not records of the Provincial and Civil Secretaries, documenting as they do the judicial functions of the Council. In the most recent intellectual re-arrangement, therefore, they have been brought together in the present series and fonds.

Contemporary copies of the records in volumes 13-24 are to be found in the despatches to the Colonial Office. These are found in the series CO 42, Canada, formerly British North America, Original Correspondence (MG11-CO42) in the Colonial Office fonds, vols. 52-57 (available on microfilm reels B-40 to B-43).
