The arrangement and contents of both the present series and the two companion series, Submissions to the Executive Council and "Put By" Submissions to the Executive Council, were reviewed in 1983-1985 in preparation for microfilming. Astray items were re-filed where the correct location could be readily determined from the registers. A cross-reference form was inserted as a record of the transfer, to indicate the new location. Duplicate items were identified, to be excluded from the filming.

Suggestions on proper citation style for the records in this series are provided in the CAB RG 1 Shelf List (see RG 1, E8 section). Note, in particular, that citations should specify the subject of the order as there may be several orders bearing the same date.

The microfilming of vols. 1-80 in this series was completed in 1986 and that of vols. 81-92 in 1991. Microfilmed copies are available on reels H-1768 to H-1805 and H-1957 to H-1965. There is a direct and very close relationship between the orders-in-council found in the present series and the state minutes in the State Minute Books of the Executive Council series, and the land minutes in the Land Minute Books of the Executive Council series, both of which are found elsewhere within this fonds. In theory, matters settling policy or precedent should be found documented with the state minutes and submissions, and matters of practice with the land minutes and submissions. Questions relating to Indian lands illustrate the fact, however, that a consistent distinction between state and land matters was not always made. Records relating to certain topics may be found scattered between series which have been designated "state" or "land."
