General note:

Portrait of Sir Charles Metcalfe (1785-1846), Governor-General of Canada 1843-1845.. Portrait was done ca. 1838 by an unknown artist..
Painting has been recently relined and conserved..
Location Rm. 330.
In 1844 two different lithographs of Metcalfe were published after William Lockwood's hand. From a comparison of these prints with the oil portrait of Metcalfe (1996-111-1) it appears as if Lockwood's images were copied from the oil portrait. This would mean that Metcalfe had the portrait in Canada during his time as Governor-General (1843-1845)..
