Fonds consists of photographs taken of musical entertainers and local bands at the Standish Hall Hotel in Hull, Quebec. Photos include images of such jazz artists as Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, "Duke" Edward Ellington, Louis Armstrong, singers Dick Haymes, Velma Middleton, Sarah Vaughn and others.

Photos were taken by Michael "Miki" Berens. Michael Berens resided and lived at the Standish Hall ca. 1949 to 1952 where he met with and photographed the many big names in jazz that performed there at that time.

Accompanying material (located in the accession file) consists of one binder with reproductions of photographs and accompanying captions and one binder of Beren's anecdotes.

Berens, Michael, 1917- : Michael Berens was born in 1917 in Toronto. He took up photography as a teen and photographed professionally for the Wallace Brothers Shows in Toronto before moving to Ottawa for university. While a student at the University of Ottawa (where he received a Bachelor's of Education and Master's of Psychology) Michael Berens lived for a period of time at the Standish Hall Hotel in Hull, Quebec where he worked taking photographs of internationally-known jazz performers and the hotel's guests. Michael was nicknamed "Miki." His wife "Mili" (Mildred) also stayed at the Standish where she became known for preparing suppers from their suite for the entertainers after the hotel's kitchen had closed for the night. Michael described himself as "never a photographer... the camera was just a machine for me... all I did was stimulate the subject."
