The earliest known watercolour of a Canadian subject in the holdings in any form may be the 19th century copy of the 1731 watercolour of the fortifications at Louisbourg held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, although the earliest known contemporary watercolour may be J. H. Bastide's 1751 watercolour of Fort Beauséjour in Acadia.

During the French régime period few artists were active in a small colony, and few of the original drawings and watercolour which were done have been acquired by LAC. With the advent of military camnpaigns in the Seven years' War, and an influx of trained British military artists and colonial officials, an increasing number of such works were produced, which have made their way into the holdings. By the mid-19th century, with the advent of photography, the practice of amateur sketching began to decline, but many individuals continued the practice of sketching as a pastime up to and beyond the Second World War.

Historique de la conservation :

Watercolours and drawings acquired by the former Public Archives of Canada in the period from ca. 1888 to 1970 from a variety of sources, including dealers, other vendors, other government departments, or from unknown private citizens, which depict events, places, activities, and other matters relating to Canadian history or the development of Canadian society, and to a lesser extent to the history of Western and global civilization. Almost all of these original works have never been accessioned, as they would have been acquired prior to 1931, after which PAC put in place a systematic accessioning system. Also included are watercolours and drawings which may have a source but which are not linked to a current descriptive record as a single or discrete item.

As items are located and accessioned they will be linked to this descriptive system.
