I was fortunate to have arrived in Canada at the beginning of winter. The wind from Lake Ontario blew insistent gusts of chill along the grey pavements of downtown Toronto. Everything I owned was stuffed into a blue suitcase with no handle. I was fortunate because Canadian winters tend to drive you inside where you can meet the inhabitants. Long before the summer, I had decided the place was warm enough to stay.

During that winter Jack McClelland, Canada's premier publisher, was in need of a managing editor and I was besotted with Canadian literature. Gabrielle Roy, Stephen Leacock, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Robertson Davies, Margaret Laurence, Mordecai Richler, Margaret Atwood, Matt Cohen, Earle Birney, Irving Layton, Leonard Cohen, Al Purdy, Michael Ondaatje, Farley Mowat.

Could anyone wish for a better education in becoming a citizen?

I should like to add this: when I sit at the end of our chipped and splintery dock in Georgian Bay, listening to my childrens' laughter, I am so glad they have not had to survive a Revolution and can be free, hopeful and very comfortably Canadian.
