This map depicts the parishes of St. John, St. James, and St. Boniface, in the present-day centre of Winnipeg. It shows woodland, meadowland and prairie, as well as land under cultivation and houses and roads. As is typical of Métis settlements, the land is divided into long and narrow river lots. St. John Cathedral, St. Boniface Cathedral, and St. James Church are indicated, as is Fort Garry (also known as Upper Fort Garry).

The Roman Catholic mission at St. Boniface, founded in 1818, became the first parish of Red River Settlement. The church at St. John's was founded in 1820 and became the first Anglican parish of the Settlement. The Anglican parish of St. James was founded in 1853.

Note générale :

Land tenure in the Red River Settlement was based on the French seigneurial system. Unlike the English (and American) system which employed the square township survey, the French system was based on long narrow river lots. Along the Red River, this pattern suited the Métis' need for both access to the river, fertile soil for crops and space for hay and pasture.
