The man has been identified as James Akavak by Joshua Akavak, his grandson.

The Kimmirut community centre is named after James Akavak, a man who personified the Great Hunter that serves as a disappearing Inuit ideal - on the last night of his life, in 1985, Mr. Akavak hosted a community feast with his final catch. Today, the spirit of Mr. Akavak lives on - almost everyone in town is a hunter and there are regular communal feasts where the latest walrus and caribou catch is shared by all.
