Group of Inuit women wearing beaded amautiit on the whaling schooner Era. The beads of the amautiit were obtained through trade with whalers. George Comer is known to sometimes use the caption "Belles of the Bay" for this image., Nivisinaaq (aka Mary) and named by Captain George Comer as Shoofly) is the woman on the far left. Names provided through Project Naming's facebook page.

General note:

An amauti (also spelled amaut or amautik) is a type of parka, traditionally worn by the Inuit women of the Eastern Arctic, with a large hood for carrying children.
The title of the photograph in square brackets is based on information provided by Project Naming. The goal of this project is to identify and record the names of people, places, activities and events in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada.
