Item consists of an overszed black leather-bound diary. The leather is tooled with with diagonal cross-hatching, and there are is the following gold-tooled: "1865 SANDFORD FLEMMING RAILWAY OFFICE HALIFAX" on front cover, with an interior title - in black and red - as follows: "Pocket Diary 1865." Published Annually by Denton and Wood, Cambridgeport, Mass. Title page has an elaborate floral border design, as well as an ilustration of a sitting woman holding a pen and a book.

Diary contains pockets to place miscellaneous items.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year. On January 3, Fleming notes that he has been married 10 years, and as an anniversary present he gave his wife a gold ring. On Dec. 30, 1863, a notice in the newspaper notes that his wife gave birth to a son. This year he is based in Halifax, but there is evidence of much train travel to the following places: Quebec City, Montreal, Peterborough, Toronto, and Collingwood. On Dec. 3, he note that he received a sum of $5000 from the Railway Department.
