The collection consists of cemetery recordings acquired from the Ontario Genealogical Society, the Archives of Ontario, individuals, and historical societies between 1973 and 1994. The transcriptions usually include the cemetery name, religious denomination of the cemetery, cemetery map, brief history of the cemetery, list of those interred, alphabetical list of surnames on monuments on headstones, transcriptions of the inscriptions on the headstones, and may include additional genealogical information on those interred. The Archives of Ontario microfilms largely duplicate the printed versions donated by the Ontario Genealogical Society.

This collection includes cemetery recordings for the following counties: Algoma, Brant, Bruce, Carleton, Dufferin, Durham, Dundas, Elgin, Essex, Frontenac, Glengarry, Grenville, Grey, Hastings, Haliburton, Halton, Huron, Kent, Lambton, Lanark, Leeds, Lennox and Addington, Manitoulin, Middlesex, Muskoka, Nipissing, Norfolk, Northumberland, Ontario, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Peterborough, Prescott, Prince Edward, Renfrew, Russell, Simcoe, Stormont, Thunder Bay, Timiskaming, Victoria, Waterloo, Wellington, Wentworth, and York. The collection also includes a Roman Catholic register of burials for locations in eastern Ontario and western Quebec, as well as transcriptions for a few cemeteries in Quebec, New York States, New Jersey and Washington State. The microfilmed material is located on reels: M-2375, M-2824 to M-2825, M-3072, M-6790 to M-6801, M-5542 to M-5548, M-7718 to M-7734, M-7763 to M-7770, M-7964 to M-7970, M-7984 to M-7995 and M-8674 to M-8700.

Ontario Cemetery Recordings : The compilation of cemetery recordings in Ontario was an ongoing project co-ordinated by the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) with its branches. The OGS transferred cemetery recordings to the Archives for addition to the collection several times a year until 1994, when the Archives stopped acquiring the recordings because they were also available at the Archives of Ontario. The majority of the recordings have been presented by the Ottawa, Kingston and Toronto branches of the OGS, although several individuals have also contributed to the collection. Donors of the papers are noted in the description which follows.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid consists of three parts. Part one is a card index ararnged alphabetically by the name of the township. It covers the recordings in print, microfilm, and microfiche formats. MSS0961 (90: Open)

Textual records (Electronic) Part 2 covers the cemetery recordings received in paper format. It is organized by volume number, file number, township, county, and cemetery. Library and Archives Canada acquired transcripts of Ontario cemeteries in print and microfilm from individual genealogists and historical societies between 1973 and 1987 and some of these were accessioned as distinct archival collections. During the 1980s, LAC also began to acquire cemetery transcriptions created by the branches of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS). The OGS deposited print versions of its cemetery transcriptions on a more or less annual basis with LAC until 1994. The OGS also deposited printed versions with the Archives of Ontario (AO) which microfilmed them as the "Ontario Genealogical Society's Cemetery Recordings Collection", reference number F 977 and microfilm MS 451. LAC received 90 reels of microfilm from the AO between 1980 and 1991 as part of an exchange program. LAC stopped acquiring the reels from in 1991 because they are widely available from the AO on Inter-Institutional Loan, and stopped acquiring print versions from the OGS in 1994 for the same reason. The AO has continued to microfilm these transcriptions and its collection now includes over 140 reels. LAC only has the first 90 reels.

Arrangement note:

The first cemetery recordings acquired from individuals were accessioned into Library and Archives Canada's holdings as distinct collections. In 1975, they were grouped together as the Ontario Cemetery Recordings collection. After that year, further acquisitions from individuals, historical societies, the Ontario Genealogical Society, and the Archives of Ontario were added to this collection. The cemetery recordings held in print format were arranged physically together during the 1980s and 1990s by year of accession and county, so that it is no longer always possible to distinguish between those acquired from specific individuals, historical societies, and the Ontario Genealogical Society. For this reason, the finding aid provides a better guide to the collection than the lower level series and sub-series descriptions.

The originals are held by the Ontario Genealogical Society, Archives of Ontario, Grenville County Historical Society, and private individuals. The Library and Archives Canada reels correlate to the Archives of Ontario reels as follows:

M-6790 to M-6801 are AO, MS451 reels 1 to 12.
M-7718 to M-7734 are AO, MS451 reels 20 to 36.
M-7763 to M-7770 are AO, MS451 reels 37 to 44.
M-7964 to M-7970 are AO, MS451 reels 45 to 51.
M-7984 to M-7995 are AO, MS451 reels 52 to 63.
