Fonds consists of correspondence to Smillie from Burland and Earle relating to business affairs, 1871-1906; a file memoranda and agreements connected with Smillie's business interests, 1854-1891, 1939; a memorandum book containing Smillie's accounts with the Continental Bank Note Company, 1864-1865, and the Canada Bank Note Company, 1884-1885; scrapbook of newspaper clippings about Smillie; and printed advertisements and statements put out by the Canada Bank Note Engraving and Printing Company and the British American Bank Note Company, 1880-1908.

Smillie, William C., 1813-1908 : William C. Smillie was born in Scotland and came with his family to Canada in 1821. The family settled in Quebec City, but Smillie moved to N.Y. in 1830 to work as a banknote engraver. In 1866 he came to Ottawa and formed the British American Bank Note Company in association with G.B. Burland and Henry Earle. After a disagreement with Burland, Smillie organized the Canada Bank Note Engraving and Printing Company in 1882. He retired to Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
