Fonds consists of microfilmed material: journals, correspondence and sketch maps. The microfilmed journals were kept by Hubert Dannell during the period 1899-1906 and largely concern his travels on the mainland of the Northwest Territories, concentrating on the Great Slave Lake area. A musk-ox hunting trip on the barren grounds north-east of Great Slave Lake in 1900 is mentioned. The microfilmed sketch maps of the Canadian Arctic mainland were drawn by H. Darrell, 1900 to 1906, and the correspondence was written by H. Darrell to A.H. Harrison, 1904, and to his parents, 1899-1910. This material is located on microfilm reels A-822, A-927 and A-1083.

Darrell, Hubert, d. 1910 : Hubert Darrell, guide, was a farmer in Manitoba's Birtle district, and joined the Klondike gold rush in 1898. He explored, mapped, prospected, trapped, and hunted throughout the North, becoming legendary for his knowledge of the Arctic. During the winter of 1905-1906, Darrell, while employed as a mail-carrier by the Hudson's Bay Company, carried news of 500 starving whalers at Herschel Island to the outside world. In 1906-1907, he guided the first R.N.W.M.P. winter mail service, and patrolled 300 miles from Fort McPherson to Herschel Island. He continued this work until his death, one year before a scheduled trip with Amundsen to the South Pole.
