Fonds consists of Migicovsky's research files, scientific articles and lectures on Vitamin D, calcium, Strontium 90 and cholesterol; policy files and lectures on Agricultural Canada research and federal government science; material from scientific and social organizations that Migicovsky belonged to and general reference files, n.d., 1924-1987.

The fonds also contains group photographs of conference participants and science students; and photographs which either show the results of experiments or which are themselves part of the experimental process, 1946-[ca. 1965].

The fonds also contains recordings of Migicovsky including, speeches, interviews, conferences, addresses, private messages, and his 70th birthday party.

Migicovsky, Bert Baruch, 1915-1986 : B.B. Migicovsky, was born in Winnipeg on 14 March 1915. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.S.A. in 1935 and received his MA (1937) and Ph.D., (1939) in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. Migicovsky helped establish a Vitamin Assay Lab for the Department of Agriculture in Ottawa before serving with the Canadian Army during World War II. After the war Migicovsky pioneered the use of radioactive isotopes in agricultural research for the Department of Agriculture. He used this technique for studying the effect of Vitamin D on the absorption of calcium and other substances in animals. Migicovsky went on to investigate the role of Vitamin D in body metabolism. The fear of radioactivity in the food chain in the late 1950s led Migicovsky to devise a method of removing radioactive strontium from milk which was adopted by the Americans.

Migicovsky was also very active in the search for agents to inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol by the body. He and his researchers devoted considerable energy to this problem and made some fundamental discoveries.

In 1964 Migicovsky became Assistant Director General and then Director General (1968) of the Research Branch of C anada Department of Agriculture. Much of his time was devoted to the administration of research and policy development. Finally in 1975 he became Assistant Deputy Minister in charge of research across Canada for Agriculture Canada. Even after his retirement in 1977, Migicovsky continued to be called upon to talk about and give advice on agricultural and scientific policy. He served on numerous committees and advisory boards. He won awards such as the Montreal Medal of the Canadian Chemical Society (1975) and honorary degrees from Carleton and University of Manitoba. He was a fellow of several chemical and agricultural societies.
